It is obtained from the seed and skin of the grape (Vitis vinifera), possessing high percentages of bioactive components such as polyphenols and anthocyanin tannins. It has a vasoprotective and cardioprotective effect and is an antiatherosclerotic controlling LDL cholesterol levels.

Native to the Asian regions of the Caspian Sea. The ancient Greeks and Romans cultivated the vine and both civilizations developed viticulture. Its seeds have been found in Bronze Age sites in Switzerland and Italy, and in the tombs of ancient Egypt.
