Development cooperation: promoting social transformation from Agri-Food

Agri-food is a key sector for sustainable development and social transformation. Being directly linked to food security, economic development and environmental sustainability, it has a unique potential to generate a positive impact on the most vulnerable communities. Development cooperation can promote projects that not only improve agricultural productivity, but also promote sustainable practices, fair trade and community welfare.

The 5 key values of development cooperation

For development cooperation to be effective, it is essential that it be based on key values that guide its implementation and growth. These values ensure the sustainability of projects, a key value at Qomer, and promote a lasting impact on beneficiary communities. These key values are listed below:

  1. Solidarity: The essence of cooperation is collaboration among actors with a shared vision of social justice and equity.
  2. Sustainability: Projects must be designed to generate a long-term impact, without compromising the resources of future generations.
  3. Respect for local cultures: The active participation of host communities, recognizing their knowledge, practices and customs, is vital to ensure the success of projects.
  4. Transparency: Trust between the different stakeholders is essential, and this is achieved through accountability and open communication.
  5. Innovation: The constant search for new solutions is key in a constantly evolving world.

How to cooperate between private enterprise and social entities

The alliance between private companies and social entities offers great opportunities for social development. Companies contribute resources, technology and management capacity. Social organizations have an intimate knowledge of the needs of communities and bring a vision focused on social welfare. For this collaboration to work, it is vital that both parties share a long-term vision . This vision must be aligned with positive economic and social impact objectives. A commitment and sensitivity to the reality of intervention and to contributing to a better world by joining forces is key.

What Qomer brings to us and what development cooperation brings to us

Qomer is an example of how the private sector can collaborate effectively in development cooperation projects. By cooperating with local entities and international organizations, Qomer provides quality food products in a way that is committed to an ethical, sustainable and socially responsible production chain. Qomer has succeeded in integrating sustainability into its ethical, sustainable and socially responsible value chain. In doing so, it contributes to the well-being of the rural communities where it operates.
This relationship brings value to the communities, but also offers Qomer access to more ethical and sustainable markets. This reinforces its commitment to sustainable development. In addition, the company has found in cooperation a constant source of innovation, since the solutions developed can also be applied in other contexts. This enhances its competitiveness and adaptability.
A clear example is Qomer' s involvement in the project led by the NGO Enraiza Derechos. The project is called "Innovation and development of the moringa value chain for community-based family farming in southern Mozambique.". This project is boosting the Moringa value chain in family farming. Its objective is to improve nutritional food security and generate food reserves for commercialization in the local market. An initiative developed by a consortium of entities formed by Enraiza Derechos, Zabaju, Fundaçao Encontro and Qomer.

Joining efforts towards Sustainable Development

Cooperation should not be understood solely as collaboration between organizations. In its broadest sense, it implies the active participation of all parties: governments, companies, NGOs and communities. Only when these actors work together, sharing knowledge and resources, is it possible to generate a real and lasting impact. Cooperation is ultimately a powerful tool for building a more just and equitable world.

Therefore, the current challenge is to build a more inclusive model of cooperation, where all voices, especially those of the most vulnerable populations, are heard and considered. In this way, cooperation is no longer seen as an act of charity, but as a true alliance for social transformation.

Development cooperation, enhanced by the agri-food sector, has the power to generate profound changes in societies. But for this to happen, the values of solidarity, sustainability, respect and innovation must be at the core of each initiative. It is also essential that the collaboration between public, private and social actors is strengthened day by day.
