Properties of rosehip oil and how to use it

Rosehip oil is obtained from the seeds of the Rosa Rubiginosa, Rosa Canina or Rosa Moschata species. It is a vegetable oil rich in essential fatty acids that can help stimulate the renewal of the epidermis and soften the skin. That is why it is often said to be one of the secrets of eternal youth. In today's article, we will summarize the main benefits and uses of rosehip oil.

What is rosehip?

The rosehip(Rosa affinis rubiginosa L.) is part of the Rosaceae family along with 2,500 other species of fruit trees and shrubs. It is a wild shrub native to Central Europe that can reach 2 meters in height and is covered with violet-colored thorns. With slender, flexible branches, it has a very attractive pale pink flower with 5 petals.

It contains a very balanced composition of essential fatty acids such as omega 3, 6 and 9 and vitamins A and C, which makes it a perfect ally for dry and blemished skin. In fact, 80% of the seeds are made up of these polyunsaturated fatty acids and the rest is mostly water.

In addition, thanks to its presence of beta-carotene and bioflavonoids, rosehip extract is good for our eyesight, helps us maintain good health and helps regulate intestinal flora.

How is rosehip oil obtained?

Rosehip oil is obtained from the seeds of the rosehip. It is a natural oil with great medicinal properties and great benefits for our skin.

The seeds of the rosehip can be found inside the fruit that gives the flower, known as rose hip. The fruits of this wild shrub are bright red or rather orange balls that grow just below the petals.

Unlike rose oil, which is obtained from rose petals only, pure rosehip oil is obtained by cold-pressing rosehip seeds.

We can also obtain oleate or macerate the rose petals with a simpler process that we can do at home. It consists of leaving the rose petals in almond oil to obtain a less pure ointment, but with the same benefits as the extract that you could buy in a pharmacy or included in any cosmetic brand.

What are the properties of rosehip oil?

Rosehip oil or rosehip extract has very beneficial dermatological properties for our skin. They could be summarized in this list of benefits:

  • Skin cell regeneration
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Accelerates healing and is an epithelializing agent.
  • Minimizes skin blemishes
  • Prevents and conceals stretch marks
  • Powerful anti-aging effect
  • Reduces acne marks on the skin
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Helps to even out skin tone
  • Provides nutrition and hydration
  • Perfect for sensitive skin

The uses for this amazing oil are endless. In fact, it is already applied in the form of temporary tattoos that cover and help treat scars.

And you must be thinking that this long list seems very interesting but do you know where and how you should apply it to get these incredible benefits?

How can I use rosehip oil?

Rosehip oil can be applied directly on the skin due to its softness. After your facial cleansing, you can apply a couple of drops on your clean hands and apply it to your face with upward movements.

As it is a dry oil, it is easily absorbed by the skin without leaving any residue. Another common way to apply it is in combination with your daily moisturizers.

When we look at each area of the body in more detail, it is necessary to understand how to apply it and with what objectives or goals.

  • On the face - apply a couple of drops of oil on your face and décolleté with a light upward massage. It's also perfect for preventing dryness and annoying little skin on our lips, so don't forget about them in your facial routine! In fact, it is also recommended to prevent crow's feet.
  • On marks such as scars, stretch marks or blemishes - this wonderful oil is the perfect remedy against these annoying skin marks or imperfections. It repairs scars, soothes any irritation and fades skin blemishes.
  • On any part of your body - musk oil gives you radiance and elasticity and helps to keep your skin perfectly hydrated. It provides hydration and nourishment, and many other benefits for your skin.
  • On the scalp - if you notice dryness or feel that your scalp is damaged, you can apply a couple of drops of oil before washing to remedy it. Massage gently for a couple of minutes and then lather as usual. If that's not enough, you can leave it on overnight by covering your hair with plastic wrap and then proceed with your washing routine.
  • On your hair - Wash your hair and, when it is damp, apply the oil on your scalp. It's perfect for giving your hair the nourishment it needs and will help renew it when it's damaged or lacking moisture.
